ICSI is used when the quality of the sperm makes the fertilisation of egg cells in the fallopian tube or test tube almost impossible. In this case, the reproductive biologist injects a selected sperm cell directly into one of the retrieved mature egg cells. If fertilisation and cell division occur, the embryo is transferred into the uterus a few days later – similar to the process of In-Vitro Fertilisation. The procedure in the run-up to ICSI corresponds to the treatment steps for In-Vitro Fertilisation.
