Unlike cryopreservation which is slower, vitrification involves cooling the eggs so quickly that they solidify and freeze straight away. The advantage of this method is that fewer harmful ice crystals, which may destroy the egg cell, are formed. We recommend vitrification of egg cells, for example, to women who want to intentionally postpone their desire to have a child until a later stage in life (social freezing). To be on the safe side, we also recommend removing egg cells and saving them for later by vitrification prior to undergoing germ-cell damaging medical treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
